![]() The question of whether it’s an issue worth putting up with in return for the in-game experience is tricky. But at this price point, it’s surely a serious flaw. You could say, so what? This monitor isn’t designed for serious content creation or office work. Even uglier, if something like a bright dialogue box pops up across the divide between light and dark elements, the result is a gradient of brightness across the box.įor the record, all this applies to both SDR and HDR modes and, on the Windows desktop, it’s all rather messy and distracting. Or let’s say you move a small, bright object over a dark background. But by way of example, if you position a bright white window next to an all-black window, the adjacent edge of the former visibly dims. Admittedly, they’re most visible on the Windows desktop rather than in-game or watching video. But the Neo G9 has its own, surprisingly crude, backlight-induced image quality issues. Visible halos around small, bright objects are the sort of issue you expect from full-array dimming. The results are never going to be perfect. Put another way, an algorithm has to decide how bright any given zone should be based on the image data. The problem with any backlight-based rather than per-pixel local dimming technology is that compromises have to be made. Nor, to be entirely candid, is it the technical tour de force we’d been hoping for. That HDMI 2.1 interface may come in handy one day, but right now this epic panel isn’t a good fit for any console. And remember that, for now, neither the Microsoft Xbox Series X|S or the Sony Playstation 5 support the G9’s extreme ultrawide aspect ratio and resolution. The full 240Hz action is available only via DisplayPort. So you can enjoy up to 144Hz refresh over HDMI, including 120Hz with the latest consoles. I do miss the increased immersiveness of the G9 tho but if you are an HDR fan boy like I am, the OLED is bliss. As for additional upgrades, the Neo G9 now supports HDMI 2.1. I will not say the Samsung looks like garbage as it still looks excellent but the AW is mind blowing. IMO if you intend to use the monitor for productivity, web browsing or anything which involves screen space and text, I would buy the Samsung but if you turn on any content like movies or games, the AW is in a whole other league due to it's HDR performance. This isn't a fault of the display rather Microsoft needs to update Windows to be better compatible with oled displays.Įven in regular desktop usage the colors on the AW are richer and deeper but this is only if you use Windows with dark mode like I do. ![]() I used the MacType app to force Windows to recognise the unconventional pixel layout on my AW so text is fine and sharp on Windows but sucks if you open any application. The AW has this rainbow like fringing effect on the text border which doesn't look good but you get used to it after some time but if you switch to an LCD you will be floored by the high text clarity. You cant always go by these youtubers out there as they are not always correct on the info they provide. Its also not going to be avail till late q4 or next year and I imagine the price will make the Neo and G9 look cheap. It would be like having a 32" 1080 monitor instead of 1440. Then new 45" Bendable is a 3440x1440 and to me that seems a low of a res for that size of a screen. I also think it will be another year or so until we see a OLED in the ratio/size of the G9. I had a G7 as a side monitor for watching TV or video while I play on the G9 and my son had 2 G7 which he did the same used 1 to game and 1 to watch TV/Videos. I replaced the 3 G7s I had with G8's and not a 1 has dead pixel or the freaky yellow spot Hardware sample had. I know it seem Hardware Unbox gave it a bad review and just like the new G8 they hated on it as well. I know it has gotten a lot of bad reviews but I havnt had a single issue out of mine. Yes the Neo G9 is still a great route to take.
